Approved rentals are completed under the GSofM Instrument Rental Agreement before collection. It records the specific instrument and the responsibilities attached to the rental.

The formal agreement is completed only after GSofM has confirmed the rental. It should match the approved instrument, rate, deposit and included accessories.
- The instrument and recorded accessories remain the property of The Glasgow School of Music.
- Rental fees are payable in advance and the standard rental agreement is for a fixed 3-month term and does not renew automatically.
- The renter must take reasonable care and must not arrange unauthorised third-party repairs or modifications.
- Damage, loss, missing accessories, avoidable repairs or unpaid rental may result in charges or permitted deposit deductions.
- Rental continues until the instrument and recorded accessories have been physically returned and checked.
Rental & Tuition
Instrument access can support lessons, but the services remain separate.

Do I need to be a GSofM student to rent an instrument?
No. Standard rental may be available to non-students where suitable stock is available. Current GSofM students receive the reduced student rate and may receive priority when stock is limited.
Which instruments are currently offered for rental?
The current rental categories are violin, guitar, ukulele, trumpet, cello and saxophone. Availability is not guaranteed and GSofM must confirm a suitable instrument before a rental can proceed.
How long is the rental agreement?
Each rental agreement is for a fixed 3-month term and does not renew automatically. For non-student rentals, the first 3 months of rental and the refundable deposit are payable before collection.
Are rental prices VAT inclusive?
Yes. The monthly rental prices shown on this page are VAT inclusive.
Is a refundable deposit required?
Yes. The deposit depends on the instrument and whether the student or standard rate applies. It is released after the instrument and included accessories are returned and checked, subject to any permitted deductions under the rental agreement.
How do I know which violin or cello size is suitable?
Physical fit matters more than age alone. Include any known size in your enquiry. Where size is uncertain, GSofM can confirm the appropriate next step before the rental is finalised.
What accessories are included with the rental?
Included accessories vary by instrument. The approved rental details and agreement record the instrument, size or type and any accessories supplied.
Does renting an instrument guarantee a lesson place?
No. Rental and tuition are arranged separately. Lesson availability depends on tutor availability, timetable suitability and student requirements.
What happens if the instrument is damaged, lost or stolen?
Contact GSofM as soon as possible. Damage, loss, missing accessories or avoidable repairs may be deducted from the deposit or charged separately if the cost exceeds the deposit.
Can I arrange my own repair?
Not without written permission from GSofM. Third-party repairs or modifications should not be arranged unless GSofM has authorised them in writing.
How do I return the instrument?
Arrange the return with GSofM. Rental continues until the instrument and all recorded accessories have been physically returned and checked.
Can I buy the rented instrument later?
Rental does not transfer ownership. Any later purchase would need to be agreed separately with GSofM and should not be assumed as part of the rental.
