GSofM Student Support
Instrument Rental for Music Students in Glasgow
Start lessons without the pressure of buying an instrument immediately. The Glasgow School of Music offers selected instrument rental by request, helping students and families begin their musical journey with greater confidence.
Why Rent First?
A practical way to begin lessons before committing to a purchase
Buying an instrument too early can be expensive, especially for beginners, children, and students still finding the right musical route. Rental gives families time to begin lessons, test commitment, and make a better long-term decision.
Lower starting cost
Renting helps students begin without the immediate expense of buying an instrument outright, particularly for higher-cost instruments such as cello or saxophone.
Better beginner decisions
Students can begin lessons, receive guidance from their tutor, and decide later whether purchasing an instrument is the right next step.
School-managed support
Rental through GSofM keeps the process connected to lessons, student progress, instrument suitability, and practical family scheduling.

Rental Terms
Clear protection for families and the school
Instrument rental should be helpful, but it also needs to be properly managed. These terms help protect the instrument, the student, and GSofM’s ability to keep rental stock available.
- The instrument remains the property of The Glasgow School of Music.
- Rental fees are payable in advance.
- The minimum rental period is 3 months.
- Normal wear is accepted, but damage, loss, missing accessories, or avoidable repairs may be charged.
- Deposits are refundable after the instrument has been returned and checked.
- Non-payment may result in the instrument being recalled.
Lesson Availability
Rental and tuition are connected, but not identical
Instrument rental can support students beginning lessons, but renting an instrument does not automatically confirm a lesson place. Tuition remains subject to tutor availability, timetable suitability, and student requirements.
- Current GSofM students receive priority where rental stock is limited.
- Trial lessons can be requested separately through our trial lesson form.
- Some instruments may be available to rent even if GSofM does not currently offer lessons for that instrument.
- All rentals are subject to school approval and current stock.
