Find your lesson route

The right route into structured music tuition.

Not every student starts from the same place. Some need confidence, some need structure, some need exam support, and some simply need the right tutor. This page helps identify the most suitable starting point before requesting a trial lesson.

Route guide

Choose the situation that best describes the student.

Use this guide as a starting point. The school will still review the enquiry properly before confirming the most suitable lesson route, tutor availability and next step.

Recommended route

Start with a structured beginner route.

For complete beginners, the priority is to begin calmly, choose the right subject route and build confidence before pressure. The first step should introduce the student properly and help establish a realistic weekly rhythm.

  • Tell us who the lessons are for, their age and whether they have any previous experience.
  • Let us know whether they already have a subject in mind or need help choosing.
  • We will consider the most suitable beginner route before confirming availability.
Common routes

Most students fall into one of these starting points.

These routes help families and adult learners understand what GSofM will consider before recommending a tutor, subject pathway or weekly lesson structure.

How the process works

A clear route from enquiry to weekly lessons.

The aim is to keep the process simple for families and adult learners while preserving the structure needed for consistent, high-quality tuition.

Tell us about the student

Submit the trial request with the student’s age, subject interest, current level, goals and availability.

We review the best route

The school considers the right subject pathway, tutor fit and likely weekly lesson structure.

Begin with a proper trial lesson

The trial is a real one-to-one lesson, helping us assess fit and giving the student a meaningful start.

Move into weekly tuition

Where suitable, lessons continue through a fixed weekly time and structured 10-lesson block.

Tutor matching

Why we do not treat lesson choice as a simple booking form.

Music tuition works best when the student’s age, confidence, aims, subject and tutor fit are considered together. The correct route is not always the most obvious one, especially for beginners, younger students or adults returning after a long break.

Age and confidence level A young beginner, a teenager preparing to perform, and an adult learner may need very different teaching approaches.
Subject and lesson pathway Some students already know their route. Others may need guidance before choosing between instruments, voice, theory or composition.
Weekly continuity Consistent progress depends on the right tutor, fixed lesson time and clear expectations from the beginning.
Questions before starting

Useful answers before you request a trial.

These answers keep the route clear without overloading the trial request process.

Do I need to know which instrument to choose before contacting the school?

No. If the student is unsure, tell us their age, musical interests, previous experience and what they hope to achieve. We can advise on the most suitable active route.

Is the trial lesson suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The trial lesson is often the best first step for beginners because it gives the student a proper introduction while helping the school assess the most suitable route into ongoing tuition.

Can adults start lessons even if they have no previous experience?

Yes. Adult learners can begin from scratch or return after time away from music. The route can be structured around enjoyment, technique, confidence, repertoire or formal goals.

Are exam routes required?

No. Exams can be useful for some students, but they are not compulsory. Some students benefit from grades, while others progress through repertoire, technique, confidence and long-term musical development.

Can the school help if we are unsure between subjects?

Yes. The route guide and trial request process are designed to help families and adult learners avoid choosing a route too quickly. We can review the student’s age, interests, goals and confidence before advising.

What happens after the trial lesson?

If the trial is suitable and availability can be confirmed, the student can move into ongoing weekly lessons through the school’s structured lesson block system.

Begin properly

Start with the right route, not just the nearest available slot.

Tell us who the lessons are for, what the student hopes to achieve, and when they are available. The school will review the enquiry and guide you towards the most suitable next step.
