Find Your Lesson Route
Find the right music lesson route before you book.
For children, teenagers, adults, beginners, returning learners and students with specific musical goals.
Use this page to compare the main GSofM lesson routes, understand how tutor matching works and decide whether to request a trial lesson. The aim is not to push every student into the same route. It is to identify the most suitable starting point.
Start with the student
The right route depends on who is learning.
A five-year-old beginner, a teenager preparing for an exam, a nervous adult singer and a returning pianist do not need the same route. Start with the learner, then choose the subject.
Children starting music lessons
Best for younger learners who need confidence, routine, listening, rhythm, coordination and a positive first experience.
Children’s lessons →Teenagers building direction
Best for students who need technique, motivation, repertoire, performance confidence or a clearer route around school commitments.
Teen lessons →Adults starting properly
Best for adults who want patient teaching, realistic progress and a route that respects confidence, time and previous musical experience.
Adult lessons →Returning after time away
Best for adults or teenagers who learned previously and want to rebuild technique, reading, repertoire or confidence.
Request a trial →Students needing structure
Best for students preparing for graded exams, theory support, sight-reading, musicianship, aural skills or wider musical understanding.
Theory route →Composition or creative music help
Best for students who need composition, notation, harmony, creative ideas or a stronger understanding of how music works.
Composition route →When the route is unclear
Best when the student’s age, confidence, goals or availability matter more than choosing an instrument immediately.
Trial lesson route →Remote lessons where suitable
Best for students who need remote tuition because of location, schedule or practical access, where the subject and level are suitable online.
Online lessons →Choose a subject route
Compare active GSofM lesson routes.
Choose a subject to read more, or request a trial if you already know the broad route. Availability and tutor fit are still confirmed by the school.

How matching works
Tutor fit matters as much as subject choice.
Choosing “piano”, “singing” or “guitar” is only part of the decision. The more important question is whether the teaching route suits the student’s age, confidence, current level, goals and general availability.
That is why GSofM uses a trial-first process. The trial gives the student a real lesson experience and helps the school confirm whether the proposed route is suitable before ongoing weekly tuition is arranged.
Fees and next steps
Check the practical route before you enquire.
Once the broad route feels right, the next decision is practical: trial lesson, lesson length, weekly availability and whether the school-led structure suits the student.
Choose a realistic starting length
30, 45 and 60 minute routes suit different ages, levels and concentration spans. The school can advise after reviewing the trial enquiry.
These are the standard lesson rates from Monday 10 August 2026.
View lesson fees →Understand the lesson journey
See how trial lessons, tutor matching, weekly lesson places, communication and Teaching Block expectations fit together.
How lessons work →Use the trial as the first real test
A trial lesson does not automatically guarantee an ongoing place. It helps confirm whether the student, tutor, route and timetable are suitable.
Trial lesson route →Right fit
GSofM is not trying to be every type of music lesson provider.
This page should help families and adults decide whether the school-led route is the right type of structure before requesting a trial lesson.
GSofM is a strong fit if you want
- A managed school route rather than a casual arrangement.
- Help choosing the right tutor and subject route.
- Clear communication around lessons, payments and scheduling.
- Weekly progress supported by a structured teaching calendar.
- A professional Glasgow music school environment.
GSofM may not be the right fit if you want
- Irregular one-off lessons with no ongoing structure.
- To arrange directly with tutors outside the school system.
- Instant placement without considering tutor suitability.
- A drop-in model where weekly lesson continuity is not expected.
- Lessons without clear payment, cancellation and calendar expectations.
How to start
Start with a trial lesson, then confirm the ongoing route.
The trial lesson is the safest first step because it gives the student, tutor and school real information before committing to ongoing weekly tuition.
After the trial, the school can advise whether the route is suitable, whether ongoing availability exists, and what the next step should be.
Tell us about the student
Share age, subject interest, level, aims and general availability.
The school reviews the route
GSofM considers the student profile and available tutor options.
Attend the paid trial
The trial gives a real lesson experience before ongoing tuition is confirmed.
Confirm next steps
If suitable, the school confirms ongoing lesson options and the relevant teaching structure.

Common questions before choosing a lesson route.
These answers help you choose the right starting point before requesting a trial lesson.
What if I do not know which instrument is right?
Start with the student’s age, confidence and goals. If you are still unsure, use the practical guidance on this page, check the lesson fees, then request a trial enquiry so the school can advise on the most suitable route.
Can I choose the tutor myself?
You can read about the tutor team, but GSofM considers suitability, availability, age, level and aims before recommending an appropriate route.
Does every trial lead to ongoing lessons?
No. The trial helps confirm whether the route, tutor fit and ongoing availability are suitable before weekly tuition is arranged.
Do you offer every instrument?
No. GSofM only lists active lesson routes. If an instrument is not shown on this page, it is not currently part of the main advertised route list.
Should children start with piano?
Piano can be a strong first route for many children, but it is not automatically the right answer for everyone. Age, interest, coordination, confidence and tutor availability all matter.
