Theory Compass Academy is The Glasgow School of Music’s ongoing small-group music theory pathway for students developing from early foundations through the Grades 1–5 pathway. Learning is organised into six-week blocks, with each block matched to an appropriate stage and focused on defined level-appropriate modules rather than attempting to cover an entire grade or the full Grades 1–5 pathway at once.
What is Theory Compass Academy?
An ongoing, level-matched music theory pathway for young music students.
The Academy is designed for students who need a steadier, progressive route through music theory before exam-focused preparation or more advanced study. It supports notation, rhythm, musical terms, written confidence and connected musical understanding at the student’s current stage through successive six-week learning blocks.
Grade 1 remains a common entry point, but the wider Academy pathway can support progression towards Grade 5 where the student’s level and learning route are suitable. Each six-week block focuses on defined modules at an appropriate stage of that pathway, and students may continue into further blocks as their knowledge develops.
Where relevant, Academy can also support preparation towards ABRSM Music Theory at the student’s current grade. Sitting an examination is optional. There is no expectation that a student will be examination-ready after one six-week block; progression depends on prior knowledge, the modules completed, continued study and the student’s demonstrated readiness.

Theory Compass Academy can support students working towards ABRSM Music Theory at Grades 1–5 where the relevant cohort and level are suitable. Academy is an ongoing pathway delivered in six-week blocks, so examination readiness is developed progressively rather than being expected after a single block.
ABRSM Music Theory
ABRSM is the principal graded theory framework referenced within the Academy pathway. A student working towards an ABRSM Music Theory examination can use successive, appropriately matched Academy blocks to develop and consolidate the relevant knowledge and written confidence over time.

At the end of each block, progress informs the student’s next stage. Where continued Academy study is appropriate, the learner can move into a further level-matched block and continue through the relevant modules.

Theory Compass Academy is an ongoing small-group pathway delivered in fixed six-week blocks with limited places. Each block is paid in advance once a place has been offered.
£108 per six-week block.
The £108 Academy fee applies to each six-week block and is paid in advance after a suitable place has been offered. Existing GSofM students receive priority access where places are limited.
Missed student sessions are not credited or rescheduled.
Because each six-week block is a fixed small-group programme, missed sessions by students are not credited, refunded or rescheduled. If GSofM cancels a session, it will be rescheduled or credited. This programme policy operates subject to applicable statutory rights and the booking and cancellation terms supplied before enrolment.
