Early ukulele lessons can produce recognisable music quickly, but that should not mean skipping the fundamentals. Secure rhythm, relaxed hands and deliberate chord changes create a much stronger basis for later progress.

Instrument and setup

Ukuleles vary in size, tuning, feel and tonal character. A playable instrument with reliable tuning and comfortable action makes beginner work considerably easier.
Compact and traditional
Soprano ukuleles are small and portable, but the compact fret spacing may not suit every learner.
A little more room
Concert instruments offer slightly more scale length and fingerboard space while retaining a familiar ukulele feel.
More space and projection
Tenor instruments may suit players who prefer more fingerboard room or a fuller response.
Different tuning considerations
Baritone ukulele commonly uses a different tuning from soprano, concert and tenor instruments, so the lesson route should match the instrument.

Lesson length is considered around age, level, concentration, goals and tutor recommendation. Trial lessons use the applicable published standard rate, there is no registration fee, and ongoing tuition follows the published Teaching Block calendar.
GSofM tuition combines one-to-one teaching with school-led administration, practical instrument guidance, dedicated teaching spaces, tutor oversight and a structured route for continued musical development.

What size ukulele should I choose?
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles differ in scale length, fret spacing and feel. Baritone ukulele commonly uses a different tuning. The best choice depends on physical comfort, musical goals and the lesson route rather than age alone.

Are ukulele exams required?
No. Exams are not required. The route can focus on practical playing, repertoire, accompaniment, rhythm and musicianship, with theory or qualification work included only where it supports the learner's goals.

How much are ukulele lessons?
Ukulele lessons use the applicable published standard rate for the selected 30, 45 or 60-minute lesson length. Current rates appear in the fee panel and on the Lesson Lengths & Fees page. Trial lessons use the standard lesson rate and there is no registration fee.
How is a ukulele trial arranged?
Tell us who the lesson is for, their age, previous musical experience, current access to a ukulele, goals and the times that could support a regular weekly lesson. The trial is a paid one-to-one lesson and initial teaching assessment.
What happens after the trial?
After the lesson, GSofM explains the recommended next step. Any ongoing weekly arrangement is agreed separately, including the tutor, lesson length, regular time and relevant Teaching Block.
