Music Theory Academy
An ongoing small-group Grades 1–5 pathway delivered through successive six-week learning blocks, with teaching matched to the learner’s current level, pace and readiness.
GSofM Academy — Theory Bootcamp
A five-session intensive for Grades 1–5 learners who need concentrated consolidation, written method and level-appropriate exam preparation.

Academy programmes are more than a sequence of group classes. Each route is designed around a clear learning purpose, with live teaching connected to purposeful work between sessions.
Small-group learning creates space for learners to hear other questions, compare approaches and build confidence while remaining within GSofM’s educational standards.
Learn together
Work through new ideas, skills and methods with an Academy teacher and a small cohort.
Practise with purpose
Reinforce learning through programme resources, guided work and digital support where appropriate.
Build understanding
Revisit difficult areas, correct misconceptions and consolidate knowledge as the programme develops.

Digital Support
Learning does not stop when the class finishes.
Theory Compass is GSofM’s separate digital music-learning platform. Where it supports a programme, Academy learners can use structured digital lessons, practice and assessment between teacher-led sessions.
Academy remains the teacher-led route; Theory Compass remains the digital platform. Used together where appropriate, they can support a more continuous learning pathway.

Academy programmes can complement private tuition, but suitable programmes are also open to learners who are not currently taking weekly lessons at The Glasgow School of Music.

What is GSofM Academy?
GSofM Academy is the teacher-led programme arm of The Glasgow School of Music, providing structured small-group courses and intensive programmes outside ordinary weekly one-to-one tuition.
Do I need to be a Glasgow School of Music student?
No. Academy programmes can support existing GSofM learners, but suitable programmes can also provide a separate entry route for learners who do not take regular private lessons at the school.
How is Academy different from Theory Compass?
Academy is teacher-led learning. Theory Compass is GSofM’s separate digital learning platform. Theory Compass may support an Academy programme where appropriate, but the two remain distinct products.
How do I know whether a programme is suitable?
Each programme page states the intended level, format and relevant suitability information. Music Theory Academy is level-matched across Grades 1–5 rather than assuming every learner progresses at the same pace.
Is Academy only for music theory?
Music theory is the Academy’s current established teacher-led pathway. The Academy format can also support other focused areas of musicianship as further programmes are introduced.
