Guitar lessons for different ages, styles and starting points.
Guitar can be a first instrument, a creative outlet, a route into songwriting or a structured pathway for developing technique. Lessons are matched to the student’s age, confidence, preferred style and goals.
Early confidence and rhythm
Young learners can begin with posture, simple chords, pulse, listening and first songs in a calm weekly structure.
Style, technique and identity
Teenage students can develop repertoire, rhythm, electric or acoustic technique and a clearer sense of musical direction.
Learn without pressure
Adults can start from scratch, return after time away or work towards songs, chords, songwriting or personal musical goals.
Move beyond self-teaching
Students who already play can strengthen technique, timing, theory, tone, practice habits and musical independence.
Guitar gives students a practical and creative route into music.
Guitar is one of the most accessible instruments for building early musical confidence. Students can begin with chords, rhythm, simple songs and physical coordination, while gradually developing technique, reading, listening and independent practice.
Lessons can support acoustic or electric guitar, beginner confidence, repertoire development, graded pathways, songwriting, accompaniment and wider musicianship depending on the student’s age, goals and experience.
Rhythm and coordination
Students connect hands, pulse, timing and movement in a practical, physical way.
Early musical confidence
Simple chords, riffs and patterns can quickly become recognisable music.
Creativity and independence
Guitar naturally supports songwriting, accompaniment, repertoire and personal expression.
A clear route for different students, styles and goals.
Guitar lessons are not one-size-fits-all. A young beginner, an adult learner, an electric guitar student and an exam-focused student may all need a different teaching route.

A practical, supportive environment for learning guitar properly.
Guitar lessons at GSofM are shaped around the student’s starting point, musical interests and preferred style. Lessons can support complete beginners, young learners, adults, acoustic players, electric players and students preparing songs, exams or performance work.
Technique, confidence and musical independence.
The aim is not simply to learn isolated songs. Good guitar tuition helps students understand rhythm, technique, listening, expression and how to practise effectively between lessons.
Chords and harmony
Students build chord knowledge, transitions, progressions and practical accompaniment skills.
Rhythm and timing
Lessons support pulse, strumming patterns, picking control and rhythmic accuracy.
Technique and control
Students develop hand position, coordination, tone, fluency and physical ease.
Musical confidence
Repertoire, performance preparation and creative tasks help students become independent musicians.
A clear route from trial lesson to regular weekly progress.
The process is designed to keep guitar lessons structured and practical: start with a paid trial, review the most suitable route, then continue into a fixed weekly lesson where appropriate.
Trial lesson
The student meets a tutor, begins playing, discusses goals and receives an initial sense of the most suitable guitar route.
Tutor matching
Placement is reviewed around age, level, preferred style, acoustic or electric focus, lesson length and timetable availability.
Weekly rhythm
Where ongoing tuition is suitable, students normally continue at a fixed weekly time to support consistency and progress.
10-lesson blocks
Ongoing lessons are organised through structured 10-lesson blocks, usually managed through Part A and Part B payments.
Guitar tuition with James Innes and the GSofM teaching route.
James Innes is a guitar tutor at The Glasgow School of Music and a University of Glasgow student with a lifelong interest in music. His musical interests span blues, roots music and contemporary jazz guitar, giving his teaching a broad, practical and musician-led foundation.
Guitar students may be matched with James where his availability, teaching style and the student’s goals are the right fit. Placement is still reviewed through the school so that age, level, preferred style, lesson length and weekly timetable are considered properly.
