Find Your Lesson Route
Find the right music lesson route in Glasgow.
Start with the learner. The right route follows.
Use three practical questions to narrow the starting point, then choose the learner route or subject that fits best. We can review the request, recommend a suitable trial starting point and use that first lesson to clarify what should come next. We respond within two working days.
Three useful questions
Begin with context before choosing the route.
The right starting point depends on more than the instrument name. Age, confidence, goals, practical setup and weekly continuity can materially change what is most suitable.
Who is learning?
Choose the learner context that most affects communication, confidence, concentration and support.
- Child or younger beginner
- Teenage learner
- Adult learner
- Returning learner
What are they looking for?
Clarify whether the main need is to begin, develop, prepare or study a particular area.
- Start from scratch
- Learn a chosen subject
- Build confidence or technique
- Prepare for exams or theory
What practical factors matter?
Check what can support effective teaching and a regular weekly commitment.
- Instrument or equipment access
- Studio or online suitability
- Weekly availability
- Relevant access requirements
Six focused routes
Choose the route that best matches the learner.
Choose the learner context, examination pathway or subject that best reflects what you already know. Each option leads to more focused guidance without requiring every detail to be decided in advance.

Online tuition is a delivery format rather than a separate instrument and remains dependent on the subject, tutor and home setup.
How guidance works
Subject choice is only one part of the match.
We consider the learner, subject, tutor availability, practical requirements and weekly timetable before recommending a suitable trial starting point.
- 01Understand the learner. Age, confidence, experience, goals and communication needs help shape the starting point.
- 02Check the practical fit. Instrument access, lesson length, studio or online suitability and weekly availability are considered.
- 03Learn through the first lesson. The trial gives the learner one-to-one teaching and gives GSofM a stronger basis for the recommendation that follows.
- 04Agree ongoing tuition separately. Any regular place includes the tutor, lesson length, weekly time and relevant Teaching Block.
Learner context
Age, confidence, experience, communication and support.
Musical goal
Subject, technique, examinations, confidence or creativity.
Practical fit
Instrument access, delivery format and weekly availability.
Trial lesson
One-to-one teaching, useful evidence and clearer next-step guidance.
Fees and practical information
The practical details to know before requesting a trial.
Lesson length depends on age, subject, confidence, concentration, physical demands and tutor guidance. A longer lesson is not automatically the better choice.
Three-stage trial process
From a few questions to the right first lesson.
We review the learner’s context, musical aim, practical requirements and realistic weekly availability, then respond within two working days with a recommended trial starting point.
Tell us about the learner
Include age, subject interests, previous experience, confidence, goals, instrument access, relevant practical requirements and weekly availability.
We review the best starting point
We consider learner context, subject fit, tutor availability, lesson length, delivery format and timetable capacity, then recommend a suitable available starting point.
Attend and receive guidance
The trial is a one-to-one teaching session. Afterwards, GSofM explains the recommended tutor, subject route, lesson length, weekly structure and relevant Teaching Block.
Route questions
Six practical answers before choosing the route.
These answers cover the main questions that arise before a trial request. Detailed attendance, payment and cancellation information remains on the dedicated policy and fee pages.
What if I do not know which instrument is right?
Start with the learner’s age, confidence, interests, goals and practical circumstances. Review the beginner and age-specific routes, then explain the uncertainty in the trial request so we can consider a suitable starting point.
How does tutor matching work?
We consider the learner’s age, current level, confidence, goals, subject, practical requirements and realistic weekly availability alongside the active tutor timetable. A tutor preference can be noted, while the final recommendation reflects the learner’s needs and current availability.
What should I include in the trial request?
Include the learner’s age, subject interests, previous experience, goals, instrument access, any relevant access or practical requirements, and the days or times that could support a regular weekly lesson.
What happens during and after the trial?
The trial is a one-to-one teaching session. It gives the learner practical experience and gives us a clearer basis for discussing the tutor, subject, lesson length, weekly structure and next step.
How are ongoing lessons organised?
Any ongoing place is agreed separately after the trial. Tuition normally uses a regular weekly lesson time and follows the published GSofM Teaching Block calendar and attendance terms.
Is there a registration fee?
No. There is no registration fee. Trial lessons use the standard rate for the selected lesson length, which is confirmed before the appointment is arranged.
You do not need every detail decided before you begin
Share what you know and let the first lesson clarify the rest.
Tell us about the learner, their interests, practical requirements and the times that could support regular weekly tuition. We will review the request and respond within two working days.
