Starting Lessons
How do new students begin?
Beginners, first enquiries and the information that helps GSofM recommend a clear first step.
Can complete beginners start music lessons?
Yes. Children, teenagers and adults can begin with no previous experience. Lessons can start with basic rhythm, sound, technique, reading and confidence. See Beginner Music Lessons.
What information should I provide before starting?
Share the learner’s age, subject interests, previous experience, goals, the times that could support regular tuition and any relevant access or learning information. See Before You Begin.
What happens after I submit an enquiry?
After reviewing the learner and your availability, we will confirm the most suitable available trial option. The next stage is a genuine paid first lesson. See How Music Lessons Work.
Trial Lessons
What should I expect from the first lesson?
Paid first lessons, published pricing and the guidance provided afterwards.
What is a GSofM trial lesson?
It is a genuine one-to-one teaching session, not a consultation. The tutor begins musical work, establishes the starting point and learns how the student responds to teaching. See Trial Music Lessons.
How are trial lessons charged?
Trial lessons use the applicable published standard rate for the selected lesson length. See Lesson Lengths & Fees.
What happens after the trial lesson?
GSofM explains the recommended subject route, tutor, lesson length and next step. Any ongoing weekly arrangement is then agreed separately. See Trial Music Lessons.

How are the subject and tutor route chosen?

Which instruments and subjects does GSofM offer?
Current routes include piano, singing, guitar, drums, violin, cello, flute, saxophone, music theory, composition and online lessons. See the Music Lessons Glasgow hub.
How do I choose the right lesson route?
Start with the learner’s interests, age, experience and goals. The route finder compares subjects and starting pathways without requiring every decision in advance. Use Find Your Lesson Route.
How is a tutor selected?
GSofM considers the subject, current level, goals, confidence, communication and preferred working style. The first lesson helps refine that recommendation. See Meet Our Tutors.
Lesson Lengths & Fees
What do lessons cost and how long are they?
Published rates, lesson-length guidance and approved alternative payment structures.
Which lesson lengths are available?
Standard one-to-one lessons are offered in 30, 45 and 60-minute formats. GSofM advises on length using the learner’s age, level, concentration, subject and goals. See Lesson Lengths & Fees.
How much do music lessons cost?
Current standard rates and effective dates are published on the dedicated fees page. That page is the authoritative public pricing source. See Lesson Lengths & Fees.
Are instalments or fortnightly arrangements available?
A two-instalment arrangement may be requested before the payment deadline and carries a £10 administration fee. Approved fortnightly tuition uses the applicable rate plus 20%. See Lesson Lengths & Fees.
Weekly Tuition & Teaching Blocks
How are regular lessons organised?
Fixed weekly appointments, Teaching Blocks and payment deadlines.
How are ongoing lessons organised?
Regular tuition normally uses a fixed weekly lesson time. Tutor time and teaching space are reserved for the student throughout the relevant Teaching Block. See How Music Lessons Work.
What is a GSofM Teaching Block?
A Teaching Block is a published period of regular tuition within the school year. The annual calendar shows teaching dates, closures, invoice dates, payment deadlines and lesson holds. See the Parent Information Centre.
What happens if Teaching Block payment is late?
Where payment or an approved written arrangement is not in place by the deadline, lessons are put on hold from the first teaching day until the account is brought up to date. See the Terms & Conditions.
Attendance & Cancellations
What happens when a lesson cannot take place?
Student absences, school cancellations and the correct reporting route.
What happens if a student misses a lesson?
Student absences during scheduled Teaching Block lessons are not credited, refunded or automatically rescheduled. A discretionary make-up opportunity may sometimes be offered when sufficient notice is given; full conditions remain in the Terms & Conditions.
What happens if GSofM or the tutor cancels?
School or tutor cancellations are handled separately from student absences. The applicable replacement, credit, refund or carry-forward process is set out in the Terms & Conditions.
How do current students report an absence?
Sign in to My Music Staff, open Calendar, select the affected lesson, choose Cancel and add a short note. See Current Students & Student Portal.
Online Lessons & Access
How are online and accessible lesson routes supported?
Remote teaching, format changes and reasonable adjustments.
Are online music lessons available?
Yes. Online one-to-one lessons are available across supported subjects when the student has the relevant instrument or learning environment, a reliable connection and an effective camera position. See Online Music Lessons.
Can a lesson change between in-person and online?
Ask GSofM administration to review the format change. The agreed route will take account of the subject, tutor and practical setup. Contact the school through Contact GSofM.
Can GSofM support disabled or neurodivergent learners?
GSofM can consider reasonable adjustments for access, communication, sensory and learning needs. Share relevant information early so the lesson can be planned effectively. See Accessibility.
Examinations & Progress
How are goals and musical development supported?
Optional examinations, preparation routes, practice and broader measures of progress.
Are music examinations required?
No. Examinations are optional. Students may work towards graded assessments or focus on confidence, technique, repertoire, creativity, theory and personal enjoyment. See the Music Exams hub.
Does GSofM support ABRSM, Trinity and school examinations?
Yes. Tutors can support appropriate graded routes, performance preparation, theory requirements and school music goals. See the Music Exams hub.
How much practice is expected and how is progress measured?
Short, regular and purposeful practice is usually more effective than occasional long sessions. Progress may include confidence, consistency, technique, musicianship, repertoire, creativity and independence. See practice guidance.

Can I visit the school without an appointment?
No. GSofM operates by appointment so teaching rooms and staff time remain reserved for scheduled students. Contact the school through Contact GSofM.
Where should I share building-access requirements?
Send mobility, sensory, communication or arrival requirements before the first visit so appropriate arrangements can be discussed. See Accessibility.
Current Families & Administration
Where should enrolled students manage lessons and accounts?
Portal access, account decisions, annual dates and formal policies.
Where do current students log in?
Current students, parents and carers use the My Music Staff Student Portal for lesson calendars, available invoice information and absence reporting. Open Current Students & Student Portal.
Who handles invoice, credit or account questions?
GSofM administration handles payment arrangements, invoice corrections, credits, refunds, timetable changes and account decisions. Tutors can receive practical lesson messages but cannot approve account changes. Use Contact GSofM.
Where can current families find dates and formal policies?
