This FAQ is public guidance. The Terms & Conditions remain the complete agreement for lessons, payments, absences, cancellations and account responsibilities.
Regular weekly tuition follows the published annual Teaching Block calendar from Monday 10 August 2026. Trial lessons are paid, and an enquiry or trial does not automatically reserve an ongoing weekly place.

What can students study?
Active subjects, learner routes and how to choose the most suitable starting point.
Which instruments and subjects does GSofM currently offer?
The active GSofM routes are piano, singing, guitar, ukulele, drums, violin, cello, flute, saxophone, music theory, composition and online lessons where suitable. Use the Music Lessons Glasgow hub for the current subject directory. Availability varies by subject, level, day and lesson length.
Can complete beginners start?
Yes. Many students begin with no previous experience. The most suitable route depends on age, confidence, concentration, subject interest, goals and realistic weekly availability.
How do I choose the right lesson route?
Use the Music Lessons Glasgow hub or Find Your Lesson Route page. The school reviews the learner’s age, experience, goals, subject interest and availability before recommending the next practical step.
Trial & Placement
How does the first lesson work?
Paid trials, tutor matching and the difference between an enquiry and an ongoing place.
Are trial lessons available?
Yes. A trial is a paid one-to-one lesson used to understand the learner’s level, goals, subject suitability and possible route into ongoing tuition.
Does a trial guarantee an ongoing weekly place?
No. Ongoing availability depends on tutor timetable, subject, lesson length, learner availability and overall scheduling suitability.
How is a tutor selected?
GSofM reviews subject, age, experience, goals, learning needs, availability and current tutor capacity. A named tutor preference can be considered, but the school may recommend a different tutor or route where that is more appropriate.
Are trial lessons refundable?
Where an applicable statutory cancellation right exists, that right remains unaffected. Outside that position, if a confirmed trial is cancelled, GSofM may charge or retain only a reasonable amount for services already supplied and any actual reasonable unrecovered loss caused by the reserved appointment. If GSofM cancels and no suitable alternative is arranged, the fee will be refunded or credited.
Lesson Lengths & Fees
What do lessons cost?
The central fee system remains the single source for current standard one-to-one rates.
How much do music lessons cost at GSofM?
The central fee panel on this page and the Lesson Lengths & Fees page show the current standard one-to-one rates. Published prices are VAT-inclusive, trials use the applicable standard rate, there is no registration fee and regular ongoing tuition follows the published Teaching Block calendar.
Which lesson lengths are available?
Standard one-to-one routes are normally available in 30, 45 and 60-minute formats. Suitability depends on age, level, subject, goals and timetable availability.
Are fortnightly lessons available?
Weekly lessons are the standard format. Fortnightly or alternate-week lessons are not guaranteed and require GSofM approval. Where approved, the applicable standard lesson rate is increased by 20%.
Can payment be split into instalments?
A two-instalment arrangement may be requested in writing before the payment deadline. It is not automatic, must be approved by GSofM and carries the published £10 Instalment Arrangement Administration Fee.
Teaching Blocks
How is the school year organised?
The annual calendar, scheduled lesson count and continuity from one block to the next.
What is the GSofM Teaching Block calendar?
From Monday 10 August 2026, regular one-to-one lessons run through a published annual Teaching Block calendar. The calendar sets out teaching dates, closure periods, invoice dates, payment deadlines and when unpaid places may be placed on hold.
How are Teaching Block invoices calculated?
Each invoice is calculated from the number of lessons scheduled for the student’s regular weekly lesson day within that Teaching Block. The total therefore reflects the actual scheduled lessons for that student.
Do lessons automatically stop at the end of a block?
No. Ongoing lessons continue from one Teaching Block to the next unless cancellation is submitted in writing to school administration and handled in accordance with the Terms & Conditions.
Do lessons run on bank holidays?
Bank or public holidays that fall inside a published Teaching Block are treated as standard teaching days unless GSofM has separately announced a closure.
Payments & Administration
When is payment due?
Payment deadlines, account holds and who is authorised to manage financial arrangements.
When is payment due?
For standard Teaching Blocks, invoices are normally issued one week before the block begins. Payment must be received before the first teaching day unless GSofM has approved a written arrangement before the deadline.
What happens if payment is late?
If payment is not received and no approved written arrangement is in place, the student’s lesson place is put on hold from the first teaching day of the relevant Teaching Block until the account is brought up to date.
Can an invoice query pause payment?
Raising an invoice query does not automatically suspend payment. Undisputed amounts remain payable unless GSofM confirms otherwise or the client has a legal right to withhold payment. Contact school administration as early as possible where there is a genuine issue.
Can payment or account changes be agreed directly with a tutor?
No. Payments, credits, account changes and lesson-place decisions must be handled through school administration. A tutor cannot amend the account informally.
How do I set up Direct Debit?
The person responsible for paying the student’s invoices should complete the secure GSofM GoCardless form. Once authorised, the mandate may be used to collect future payments due to The Glasgow School of Music.
Does setting up Direct Debit pay an invoice already issued?
No. Completing the mandate does not automatically pay an invoice that has already been issued. Unless GSofM confirms that it will be collected by Direct Debit, the invoice must still be paid using its stated payment instructions by the due date.
Children, Teenagers & Adults
Who can take lessons?
Age, readiness, adult learning and how the route changes across different learners.
What age can a child start music lessons?
There is no single starting age for every child or instrument. Readiness depends on concentration, communication, confidence, physical suitability, subject interest and the ability to engage with a structured lesson. See the Children’s Music Lessons route for the current pathway.
Can teenagers begin with no previous experience?
Yes. Teen beginners can start from the foundations. Tutor placement and subject choice should reflect motivation, confidence, musical interests, school commitments and realistic practice time. See the Teen Music Lessons route.
Can adults start or return to music lessons?
Yes. Adult beginners and returning musicians can work on confidence, technique, reading, theory, repertoire, exams, creativity or personal enjoyment. See the Adult Music Lessons route.
Are lessons suitable for neurodivergent or disabled learners?
GSofM can consider reasonable adjustments and suitability on an individual basis. Relevant access, communication, sensory or learning information should be shared before placement so the school can review what support is realistically available.
Exams, Practice & Progress
How is development supported?
Optional exams, practice expectations and the wider measures used to understand progress.
Are music exams required?
No. Exams are optional. Start by asking whether assessment adds useful structure through Are Music Exams Necessary?. If an exam is appropriate, check first-exam readiness, then use Music Exams & Qualifications to choose the relevant assessment format, board, theory or preparation route.
How much practice is expected?
Practice should be realistic for the learner’s age, level, goals and circumstances. Short, regular and purposeful practice is generally more useful than occasional long sessions. For a structured method, use How to Practise Music Effectively.
How does GSofM understand progress?
Progress may include confidence, consistency, technique, musicianship, repertoire, creativity and increasing independence. It is not measured only by completed pieces or exam results. See the Student Progress Framework for the wider development model.
What happens when progress is uneven?
Uneven progress is normal. A tutor may adjust repertoire, technical priorities, practice guidance, exam pace or lesson focus to identify the next realistic step.
Location, Access & Online
Where and how do lessons take place?
Kinning Park, appointment-only access and when online tuition may be suitable.
Where is The Glasgow School of Music?
GSofM is based at 542 Scotland Street West in Kinning Park, Glasgow. Lessons are appointment-only; the premises are not operated as a walk-in service. See the Kinning Park location guide for the local route.
Are online music lessons available?
Yes, where the subject, learner, technology and home environment make online tuition suitable. Availability and tutor fit vary. See Online Music Lessons for the dedicated route.
Can lessons switch between in-person and online?
A change of format is not automatic. It must be agreed with school administration and depends on tutor availability, subject suitability and the practical lesson setup.
What access information should be shared before the first lesson?
Share any relevant mobility, sensory, communication or building-access requirements before placement so the school can review the available route and reasonable adjustments.
Absences & Cancellations
What happens when a lesson is missed?
Student absences, tutor cancellations, summer closure and ending ongoing lessons.
What happens if a student misses a lesson?
Student absences during scheduled Teaching Block lessons are not credited, refunded or automatically rescheduled. Where an absence is recorded through the Student Portal at least 48 actual hours before the scheduled lesson start time, the client may request discretionary make-up consideration through GSofM administration. The request must be received by 11:59 pm UK time on the seventh calendar day after the original scheduled lesson. Any offer is subject to tutor, room and timetable availability, must normally be accepted within 72 hours and taken within 28 days of the original absence, excluding published school closures. What happens if GSofM or the tutor cancels?
School or tutor cancellations are handled separately. Where no suitable substitute, alternative lesson, replacement lesson or carry-forward arrangement is provided, GSofM will arrange an appropriate credit, replacement or refund route.
Do regular lessons continue during summer?
The standard weekly timetable closes during the published summer closure period. Optional summer lessons, workshops, intensives or exam preparation may be offered separately, subject to availability and school approval.
How do I cancel ongoing lessons?
Cancellation must be sent in writing to school administration. To avoid confirming the next Teaching Block, valid written cancellation must be received by 11:59 pm UK time on that block’s published payment deadline. Informing a tutor, stopping attendance, stopping payment or assuming lessons end at the end of a Teaching Block does not close the account.
