Before applying
Teaching within a managed music school
GSofM tutors teach as part of the school—not as independent room hirers operating separate businesses.
Any appointment is made through GSofM’s PAYE employment structure and is subject to written terms, eligibility to work, safer-recruitment checks, onboarding and suitable timetable demand. The school manages enrolment, billing, core administration and family communication routes.
Selection standards
Musicianship is essential. Teaching judgement matters just as much.
A strong application shows how the candidate communicates, adapts, plans and helps students progress—not only what they have performed or studied.
Clear, responsive instruction
Applicants should be able to explain ideas at the learner’s level, diagnose difficulties and connect technique with musical purpose.
Reliable weekly commitment
Consistent attendance, preparation, punctuality, accurate communication and responsible use of school systems are fundamental.
Safe professional boundaries
Tutors must understand that safeguarding, confidentiality and school-led communication are continuing responsibilities.
Application fit
Applications are considered against real school demand
GSofM may review applicants across instrumental, vocal, theory and composition teaching, but the application route should not be read as confirmation that every subject is currently recruiting.
The strongest fit usually combines secure subject knowledge, credible teaching experience, appropriate availability and the ability to maintain a stable weekly timetable. Applications that offer only occasional or highly changeable availability may not suit the school model.
Safeguarding and PVG
Regulated teaching roles require the correct PVG membership
In Scotland, a person must be a PVG Scheme member before carrying out a regulated role with children, protected adults or both.
GSofM assesses the role and completes the appropriate recruitment and disclosure route before regulated teaching begins. This requirement also applies before a candidate carries out teaching as a trial session where that activity forms part of a regulated role.

Potentially suitable candidates may be invited to discuss teaching approach and role fit.
Assessment and checks
The school may seek references, evidence, a teaching assessment and required safer-recruitment checks.
Written appointment
No work is confirmed until GSofM issues the relevant written terms and completes required clearance.

Before you submit
Does applying guarantee an interview or teaching role?
No. Applications are reviewed against school need, experience, availability and suitability. Submission does not guarantee a response, interview, appointment or teaching hours.
Is GSofM recruiting for every teaching subject?
No. This is a speculative application route, not a live vacancy list. GSofM may consider applications across relevant instrumental, vocal and musicianship areas when current or anticipated demand supports recruitment.
Are GSofM tutors self-employed?
GSofM’s teaching appointments operate through the school’s PAYE employment structure rather than independent room hire. Any appointment remains subject to written terms, eligibility, onboarding and suitable timetable demand.
Is PVG Scheme membership required?
A person carrying out a regulated role with children, protected adults or both in Scotland must be a member of the PVG Scheme for that type of role before beginning it. GSofM assesses the role and manages the appropriate recruitment and disclosure process.
Can I teach a trial session before PVG clearance?
Not where the trial activity would involve carrying out a regulated role. Required PVG membership and school clearance must be in place before regulated teaching activity begins.
What availability should I provide?
State the days and times you could commit to consistently each week. GSofM’s regular tuition model depends on stable weekly availability rather than occasional or frequently changing hours.
Should families use this application form?
No. Prospective students and families should use the Trial Music Lessons page. Current students should use the school’s normal administration contact route.
