What is Theory Compass Academy?
Theory Compass Academy is a structured small-group music theory programme in Glasgow. It helps young students, typically around ages 7–12, build Grade 1 foundations through guided teaching, practice and route advice before moving towards exams, Bootcamp preparation or one-to-one support.
Who is it for?
Young musicians who need stronger foundations in notation, rhythm, key signatures, time signatures, musical terms and early theory understanding.
How is it taught?
The first Academy route runs as a 6-week small-group course, with 60-minute sessions and approximately 4–8 students per group.
How much does it cost?
The Academy fee is £108 per student, paid in advance once a suitable place has been offered by The Glasgow School of Music.
Does it replace lessons?
No. Theory Compass Academy complements one-to-one instrumental or vocal lessons by strengthening the understanding that supports practical progress.

How place requests work
A place request is reviewed before a place is confirmed
Submitting the form does not automatically confirm a place. GSofM reviews the student’s age, level, experience and suitability before recommending the right route.
Parent submits a request
Tell us the student’s age, current level, experience, goals and any relevant exam plans.
GSofM reviews suitability
We consider whether Academy, Bootcamp, one-to-one theory or a waiting list route is most appropriate.
We recommend a route
If needed, we may clarify the student’s level before offering a course place.
A place offer is sent
Where suitable, we send the next step, payment details and any practical course information.
Payment confirms the place
A place is only confirmed once the offer has been accepted and payment has been received.
Payment and attendance
Clear expectations before a place is confirmed
Theory Compass Academy is a structured small-group course. Places are limited, payment is made in advance, and missed student sessions are not credited or rescheduled.
Academy place request
Request a Theory Compass Academy place
Complete this form to request a place or ask us to recommend the right theory route. Submitting the form does not confirm a place. We review the student’s age, current level, confidence and suitability before advising the next step.
Important: a place is only confirmed after suitability has been reviewed, an offer has been made and payment has been received.
Questions parents ask
Theory Compass Academy FAQs
These answers help parents understand whether the Academy route is suitable before submitting a place request.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
It may be suitable for students at an early stage, but the school will review age, confidence and current musical experience before confirming whether the Academy is the best route.
Is this the same as Grade 1 theory exam preparation?
The Academy builds Grade 1 foundations. Students who need fast exam preparation may be better suited to the Bootcamp or one-to-one theory support.
What if my child already has one-to-one lessons?
The Academy is designed to complement one-to-one lessons. It can strengthen the theory knowledge that supports instrumental or vocal progress.
What happens if my child misses a session?
Missed student sessions are not credited or rescheduled because this is a fixed small-group course. If GSofM cancels a session, it will be rescheduled or credited.
Can non-GSofM students apply?
Yes, where places are available. Existing GSofM students receive first access, but external students may request a place.
What if I choose the wrong route?
That is exactly why place requests are reviewed. GSofM may recommend Academy, Bootcamp, one-to-one theory or a waiting list route depending on the student.
Does submitting the form confirm a place?
No. Submitting the form is a request only. A place is confirmed only after suitability has been reviewed, an offer has been made and payment has been received.
Is payment required before the place is confirmed?
Yes. Payment is required in advance once a place offer has been made. The place is not confirmed until payment has been received.
