What is Theory Compass Bootcamp?

A focused short-course for theory consolidation and exam-readiness.

Bootcamp is designed for students who already have some theory knowledge and need a more focused route. It can support work from Grade 1 to Grade 5 level, depending on the student’s starting point, cohort availability and whether Bootcamp is the right format.

For students who need slower foundation-building, Theory Compass Academy or one-to-one music theory lessons may be more suitable.

Is Bootcamp the right route?

Bootcamp is for focused consolidation, not a first introduction.

Bootcamp is best when a student already has some theory foundations and can work at pace. If the foundations are not secure yet, Academy or one-to-one lessons may be a better route.

Good fit

Students who already know some theory.

Good candidates have met notation, rhythm, terms, keys or written theory before and now need clearer method, accuracy, recall or exam-readiness between Grade 1 and Grade 5 level.

Focused consolidation
Not the right fit yet

Students starting from zero or needing slower pacing.

Complete beginners, anxious students, students with uneven foundations or students needing highly specific Grade 5 preparation may be better suited to Academy or one-to-one theory support.

Route reviewed first

What students cover

Focused theory work, matched to the student’s level.

Bootcamp is not a full syllabus page. The exact content depends on the student’s level, but the course concentrates on the areas most likely to affect accuracy, confidence and exam-readiness.

Reading

Reading, notation and rhythm

Note reading, clefs, accidentals, note values, rests, metre, grouping and rhythm accuracy appropriate to the student’s level.

Secure the basics
Pitch

Keys, scales and intervals

Level-appropriate work on key signatures, scale patterns, intervals, tonal awareness and the relationships between notes.

Understand structure
Grade 5

Chords, harmony and fluency

For higher-level students, support may include chords, cadences, harmonic thinking and the written fluency needed around Grade 5 level.

Higher-level support
Method

Written method and exam confidence

Students learn how to approach questions, avoid guessing, correct mistakes and use theory knowledge under assessment conditions.

Build confidence

Bootcamp vs Academy vs one-to-one

Different Theory Compass routes serve different needs.

The distinction should stay simple: Academy builds foundations, Bootcamp consolidates, and one-to-one lessons provide tailored support.

How place requests work

A request is reviewed before a place is offered.

Because Bootcamp cohorts depend on level and suitability, submitting the form does not automatically confirm a place.

Submit request

Tell us the student’s age, current level, experience, goals and any exam plans.

Review suitability

GSofM reviews whether Bootcamp, Academy or one-to-one theory is the best route.

Match the level

We consider whether the student fits the available Grade 1–5 cohort or needs another route.

Offer sent

If suitable and available, we send a place offer with payment and course details.

Fees and attendance policy

Clear expectations before a place is confirmed.

Bootcamp is a fixed course format with limited cohort places. Payment is made in advance once a place has been offered.

Course fee

£175 per student.

The Bootcamp fee is paid in advance after a suitable place has been offered. The exact content focus depends on the student’s level and the cohort route.

Attendance

Missed student sessions are not credited or individually rescheduled.
