A parent guide to online preparation, exam-board checks and choosing the right support route.

Planning question

Current UK exam routes

ABRSM and Trinity both offer Grade 5 Theory digitally, but the systems differ.

The online answer is yes for both boards in the UK. The booking window, platform and wider exam-route context are board-specific.

ABRSM Grade 5

Online and on demand.

ABRSM assesses Music Theory Grades 1–5 through online exams. Candidates can book at any time and currently have 28 days from booking to take the exam.

When online works well

Online Grade 5 Theory preparation can be effective with the right student and setup.

The format can work because theory is visual, written and method-based. But the lesson structure has to be clear.

Good fit

Online preparation may suit independent students.

Students who can concentrate on screen, complete written tasks, submit work, correct mistakes and follow a weekly routine may do very well with online theory support.

FocusCan work on screen.
RoutineCompletes tasks.
FeedbackUses corrections.
SetupQuiet workspace.
What helps

Online theory needs a practical workflow.

Good online preparation usually needs clear written exercises, a way to review work, regular feedback, a reliable connection and a parent-supported routine where needed.

When in-person may be better

Online is not automatically the best option for every student.

The right format should follow the student’s readiness, not family convenience alone.

01Younger studentsSome younger learners need more direct physical structure, pacing and attention support.
02Weak foundationsIf rhythm, notation, keys or intervals are very insecure, in-person work may make diagnosis easier.
03Low written confidenceStudents who panic with written tasks may benefit from closer support before moving to online independence.
04Poor home setupIf the student has no quiet space, unreliable technology or poor task completion, online preparation may be inefficient.

Before booking

What to check before booking an online theory exam.

GSofM can support preparation, but exam boards are the authority on live exam rules. Check the current official board guidance before entering a student.

Exam-board checks

Check the current exam format and booking process.

Before booking, families should confirm the current syllabus, digital platform, booking route, fees, deadlines, identification and technical requirements. If Grade 5 is part of a higher-grade plan, accepted prerequisite routes should also be checked where relevant.

Families should check technology, internet connection, device suitability, quiet workspace, identification rules, supervision requirements and any exam-board instructions for the day.

Safe planning principle

Use GSofM for preparation support. Use the exam board for official booking rules.

GSofM can help students prepare, repair gaps and choose the right support route. Official exam entry decisions should always be checked directly with the relevant exam board before booking.

Official exam-board note

Check current exam-board requirements before booking.

Exam-board requirements, syllabuses, exam formats, online availability, paper availability, fees, booking procedures, technical rules and accepted alternatives can change. GSofM can support preparation and route planning, but families should always check current official exam-board guidance before entering a student.

Can GSofM help with online Grade 5 Theory preparation?

Yes. GSofM can support Grade 5-level theory through online or in-person one-to-one preparation.
