Theory Compass Bootcamp
Grade 1 Exam-Readiness Week
A focused 5-day music theory intensive at The Glasgow School of Music for students who need clearer Grade 1 understanding, stronger exam confidence and structured preparation before the next step.
Who this is for
For students who need focused Grade 1 theory consolidation
The Bootcamp is not a general music club. It is a concentrated theory route for students who are around Grade 1 level and would benefit from structured revision, exam-style practice and clearer confidence.
Preparing for a Grade 1 theory exam
For students who need to organise their knowledge, practise question styles and build confidence before an exam route.
Knows some theory, but feels unsure
For students who have covered some notation, rhythm or terms, but need stronger understanding and recall.
Needs a focused reset
For students who have struggled previously and need a clearer, structured route through core Grade 1 material.
Ready to strengthen foundations
For students whose instrumental progress would benefit from stronger reading, rhythm and theory confidence.
Bootcamp or Academy?
Choose the route that matches the student’s need
The Bootcamp and the 6-week Academy are connected, but they are not the same. The Bootcamp is the faster exam-readiness route; the Academy is the steadier foundations route.
Grade 1 Exam-Readiness Bootcamp
Best for students preparing quickly, consolidating before an exam, resitting, or needing focused Grade 1 theory support in a shorter timeframe.
Grade 1 Foundations Academy
Best for students who need a calmer 6-week route to build notation, rhythm, terms and Grade 1 confidence over time.
What students cover
Focused Grade 1 theory topics, taught for confidence and exam readiness
The Bootcamp is designed to help students strengthen the core areas that most often affect theory confidence: reading, rhythm, notation, terms, key signatures and exam-style application.
Notes, clefs and basic notation
Students revisit note naming, reading accuracy and how written music connects to real playing.
Note values and time signatures
Students work on rhythm recognition, note values, rests and understanding simple time signatures.
Scales, key signatures and intervals
The Bootcamp supports the core pitch knowledge expected around Grade 1 level.
Terms, signs and question practice
Students build familiarity with musical terms, signs and common question formats.
How the place request works
A request is reviewed before a place is confirmed
The Bootcamp has limited places and is not automatically confirmed when a form is submitted. GSofM reviews the student’s age, level, experience and suitability before offering the next step.
Parent submits request
Tell us the student’s age, theory experience, exam situation and any relevant learning context.
GSofM reviews suitability
We check whether Bootcamp, Academy or one-to-one theory support is the most appropriate route.
Place offer sent if suitable
If the Bootcamp is appropriate and places are available, we send the next step and payment information.
Payment confirms the place
The place is confirmed only once the offer has been accepted and payment has been received.
Payment and attendance clarity
Clear expectations before a place is accepted
The Bootcamp is a short, intensive course with limited places. The attendance and payment structure is designed to keep the course viable, fair and clear for all participating families.
£175 paid in advance
Payment is required to confirm an offered place. A submitted request does not reserve a place automatically.
Missed sessions are not credited
Because this is a short group intensive, student-missed sessions are not individually credited or rescheduled.
GSofM cancellations are protected
If GSofM has to cancel a session, the affected session will be rescheduled or credited as appropriate.
Tell us about the student
Use the form below to request a Bootcamp place. The more accurate the information, the easier it is for us to recommend the right next step.
Please include the student’s age, current theory experience, whether an exam is planned, and any preferred cohort or availability information. If the Bootcamp is not the right fit, we may recommend Academy or one-to-one theory support instead.
