Who can apply?

Strong music tutors

Tutors with strong musicianship, clear teaching communication, professional standards and the ability to support students over time.

Current priority

Piano, singing and theory

These are the main priority areas because of student demand, exam/theory growth and school capacity planning.

Safeguarding

PVG and professional conduct

Roles involving children or protected adults require appropriate safeguarding standards and relevant PVG / Disclosure Scotland checks.

Outcome

No automatic interview

Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview, offer of work or immediate placement on the timetable.

Tutor standards

Strong teaching is more than strong playing.

We are not trying to build a loose directory of freelancers. We are building a dependable pool of suitable tutors who can support the school’s standards, student continuity and future growth.

Recruitment priorities

Current and future teaching areas.

GSofM is building tutor capacity ahead of demand. The priority areas below help protect lesson availability, continuity, cover and subject growth.

High priority

Piano tutors

Core demand area. Strong piano tutors should be able to support beginners, developing students and structured progression.

High priority

Singing tutors

Growth area for children, teenagers and adults, including healthy technique, confidence, performance and musical expression.

High priority

Music theory tutors

Important for exam preparation, musicianship and future Theory Compass Academy development.

Active route

Guitar and drums

Useful for continued subject depth across practical playing, rhythm, repertoire and developing confidence.

Active route

Strings

Applications may be considered for violin, viola and cello where the tutor meets the school’s teaching and safeguarding standards.

Active route

Flute, saxophone and composition

Suitable tutors may strengthen availability across existing GSofM lesson routes where there is demand and appropriate fit.

GSofM only presents subjects it can responsibly support. Applications outside active or planned routes may not be progressed.

Application process

How tutor applications are reviewed.

The process is designed to protect students, families, tutors and the school. Not every suitable musician will be the right operational fit at the right time.

Discussion

Suitable applicants may be invited to discuss teaching approach, student levels and professional expectations.

Checks

References and PVG

Relevant checks are considered before any ongoing teaching arrangement is confirmed.

Onboarding

Systems and timetable fit

Any appointment depends on timetable need, room capacity, student fit, documentation and school processes.

Safeguarding and PVG

Safeguarding is part of the recruitment decision.

Teaching music to children, teenagers and adults requires more than musical ability. GSofM expects appropriate boundaries, professional communication, reliable conduct and safeguarding awareness.

PVG requirements depend on whether a role is a regulated role. Disclosure Scotland guidance should be checked for the specific role and context. PVG checks support safer recruitment; they do not replace supervision, professional boundaries or clear reporting routes.
